through、throughout、across 的区别：画出三个形状，一眼选对

你正在写一句话：
We observed consistent performance ____ architecture generations.
手停住了。through？throughout？across？
查词典只会更糟，因为三个词回给你的释义几乎是同一套：穿过、贯穿、遍布、自始至终。于是你随手挑一个交上去，永远不知道它读起来地不地道。
合上词典。这三个词的差别不在词义，而在形状。
三个词，三种形状
画出来之后，它们就不再像一家人了：

through：存在一条路线
through 是三个词的本源，它强调的是路径。有东西在移动，有入口，有出口。
Data flows through the pipeline. The request goes through several stages. She walked through the tunnel.
问自己一句：有什么东西真的在移动吗？有，就用 through。
throughout：填满内部
throughout 把移动整个丢掉了。它说的是遍布在某个东西内部的每一处。
Caching is enabled throughout the system. This mechanism is used throughout the network.
throughout 和 through 就差几个字母，最容易混的就是这里。把它们放到同一个对象上，差别就藏不住了：
The token passes through the transformer. 一个 token，从输入走到输出。 Positional encoding is used throughout the transformer. 没有东西在动，只是每一层都有它。
throughout 也能用在时间上，因为一段时间足够连续，可以被填满：
The service was available throughout the day.
across：横跨多个独立事物
across 需要几个同级、彼此独立的对象，它一次跨过所有这些。
The trend is consistent across models. We ran the same test across datasets. This policy applies across teams.
GPT-2、GPT-3、GPT-4、Llama、Gemma。五个名字，五个独立的东西，全是同级。这就是 across 的地盘。
回到那句话
We observed consistent performance ____ architecture generations.
architecture generations 指的是 Gen 1、Gen 2、Gen 3、Gen 4。四代架构，彼此独立，全是同级。所以答案是 across：
We observed consistent performance across architecture generations. ✅
而 throughout architecture generations 之所以不对，理由纯粹是几何的：
throughout 需要一个连续的东西来填：一整套系统、一整张网络、一整天。架构代际是离散的，Gen 1 和 Gen 2 之间没有任何可填的东西。没有「内部」，throughout 就无处着力。
捷径
选词之前，只问一个问题：它后面那个东西是什么形状？

最后
这三个词难，不在语法，而在双语词典把它们压平成同一个译词。把那个译词丢掉，改问：后面跟着的东西，是一条线、一个体积，还是一排东西？
答出这个，选择就已经做完了。
